CM Update 1/3/10

Romans 12:10 -- Be kindly affectionate to one another with brotherly love, in honor giving preference to one another.

One of the kids in the children's ministry asked me if I knew that Tiger Woods decided to change his name to a new animal. I said, "No." He said, "Yeah, he can't decide between chee-tah and lion." Bu bum ching! (The sound of a drum after a bad joke.)

Our society is so sexually-charged that we have to be very careful how we interact with others. We always have to make sure we are keeping ourselves and others safe. However, when I read Romans 12:10, the words affectionate and brotherly struck me. We should be affectionate with one another as we would with a brother or sister. We are family, and God desires that we care for one another as family. So, in that light, I love each of you brothers and sisters.

Happy New Year!!!

In Jesus,
Phil

CM Update 12/27/09

Romans 11:22-23 -- Therefore consider the goodness and severity of God: on those who fell, severity; but toward you, goodness, if you continue in His goodness. Otherwise you also will be cut off. And they also, if they do not continue in unbelief, will be grafted in, for God is able to graft them in again.

Paul says, "Consider the goodness and the severity of God." This is a great reminder. We must find the proper balance of walking in the fear of the Lord and the joy of the Lord. His wrath is great, and His love is great. If we don't consider His severity, we won't fully know His goodness. I thank God that I know more of His goodness than His severity. But, I want to grow in knowing His severity, so I might more fully know His grace and love in dying for me.

Merry Christmas!!!

Phil

CM Update 12/20/09

Acts 15:10 -- Now therefore, why do you test God by putting a yoke on the neck of the disciples which neither our fathers nor we were able to bear?

As followers and teachers of Christ, we have to be very aware of the yoke (the burdens) that are placed on us by others and ourselves or that we place on others. Jesus desires the weight on us to be lifted by yoking with us. He wants to bear our load as we walk with Him.

Today, I felt a heavy load on my shoulders, for no apparent reason. I just felt heavy. Then I remembered two verses I read this morning that tell me of the light load of Jesus, Acts 15:10 & Matt 11:28-29. As I reflected on these verse, I could feel the stress release and my nerves settle down. Praise the Lord for His word! And, praise Him for the rest we find in His presence.

In Jesus,
Phil

CM Update 12/13/09

Proverbs 16:16 -- How much better to get wisdom than gold! And to get understanding is to be chosen rather than silver.

One of the most damaging aspects of the fall must be the change of personal priorities. Before the fall, Adam and Eve knew what was important. After the fall, humanity grasps for things that are unimportant, and we neglect the things that are. In most cases, the percentage of time a person spends pursuing their finances far outweighs the amount of time looking for wisdom. Yet, the Lord says wisdom is of far more value. Let us strive to have the Lord's priorities in our lives, so we might attain the fullness of all the Lord has for us in our new lives in Christ.

In Jesus,
Phil

CM Update 12/6/09

Proverb 1:10 -- My son, if sinners entice you, do not consent.

Wouldn't it be nice if sin was that easy to overcome? If we could just tell sin to leave us alone, and it would be done? If you have seen the news, you know that Tiger Woods wishes that sinners were so easy to turn from. He wishes he had the power to not consent to sin.

Yet, the Bible teaches we can turn from sin, and that is possible with the power of God's Spirit through Jesus Christ. Without His power to not consent, we are ruled by sin. With His Spirit, we have a way of escape. Be thankful today that you have the power of the living God within you, and you get to pass this on to children in great need of good news within a world full of enticement.

In Jesus,
Phil

CM Update 11/29/09

Romans 8:18 -- For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us.

In this Thanksgiving week, I am so grateful that we have a perspective that is higher than the here and now. Our home is not this world. We are not citizens of this land. If we were, I would be greatly depressed. But, our sights are set on eternity. The struggles we face now in the light of the future are nothing.

Keep looking up to the Lord, so you might rise above the mire that can bog us down.

In Jesus,
Phil

CM Update 11/22/09

Revelation 1:5-6 -- ...and from Jesus Christ, the faithful witness, the firstborn from the dead, and the ruler over the kings of the earth. To Him who loved us and washed us from our sins in His own blood, and has made us kings and priests to His God and Father, to Him be glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen.

The phrase faithful witness stood out to me as I read this verse. I don't generally think of Jesus as being a witness. I think that I am supposed to be a witness for Him. But as I reflected on this verse, I thought, "Wow, this is the truth." History shows that the church in general has always struggled with being a good witness. And not only the church in general, but I fail personally at being a good witness for Jesus. It is only when I (when we) let Jesus shine forth without man-made tactics that He is revealed. Jesus, You are the faithful witness. Do your work and help us to follow.

In Jesus,
Phil

CM Update 11/8/09

Hebrews 13:2 -- Do not forget to entertain strangers, for by so doing some have unwittingly entertained angels.

This verse has always intriguing to me. Have I entertained any angel? Have I experienced the presence of an angelic being? I don't know. Once, my wife and I had some strange car problems in a deserted area at night that were resolved in a matter of moments by some people who came and went without many words. We wonder if they were angels?
How about you? Beyond being highly intriguing, this verse should remind us that no matter where we are, we should treat people with honor and dignity, just as Christ who lives in us would. Keep your eyes peeled this may be your day.

CM Update 11/1/09

Titus 2:9-10 -- Exhort bondservants to be obedient to their own masters, to be well pleasing in all things, not answering back, not pilfering, but showing all good fidelity, that they may adorn the doctrine of God our Savior in all things.

I very much enjoy seeing my wife all fancied up when we go out. She doesn't have to say anything, she just radiates her presence. The perfumed smell of her hair wafts through the air, and her smile makes me smile. It is well pleasing.

In Titus, Paul tells the people to adorn the doctrine of God. What does that mean? It means that the people could share the accurate teaching of Jesus with the life they lived. They would use words to preach, but their message would be shared before and after the preaching with their conduct. I can become frustrated with much talking about God that is followed by little action. May our church be a living body that talks about Jesus, but even more adorns it in our lives.

In Jesus,
Phil

1 Thessalonians 3:7-8 -- Therefore, brethren, in all our affliction and distress we were comforted concerning you by your faith. For now we live, if you stand fast in the Lord.

Watching our brothers and sisters in Christ live the life of devoted followers of Christ is such an encouragement. I thank God for those in the Church who, by their dogged desire to live for Christ, shine forth to the rest of us. So, thank you, to each and everyone of you who are following Jesus with passion. Keep it up, stand fast, and don't give in or give up. You are a comfort and encouragement to me and the rest of your brothers and sisters.

CM Update 10/11/09

2 Corinthians 5:20 - Now then, we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God were pleading through us: we implore you on Christ's behalf, be reconciled to God.

Sometimes sharing the good news with people can feel like we are faith pushers. And, many who hear the good news preached feel like they are hearing yet another sales pitch in this world of many salesmen. This false perception can make sharing our faith difficult, so we need to know the true reality of 2 Cor 5:20. In actuality, it is not you or I who wants to convince others of the good news, it is Christ Jesus, Himself. We implore others on Jesus' behalf. He is the One who pleads for men, women, and children to be reconciled to God. We get to pass on this good news, so don't ever feel bad about imploring people to hear.

Phil

CM Update 10/4/09

1 Corinthians 2:9 - "Eye has not seen, nor ear heard, nor have entered into the heart of man the things which God has prepared for those who love Him."

The creativity of God is beyond comparison. In creating the universe, He not only created it to be functional and productive, but He created it with style. Think of the various species of birds, think of the colors we are seeing as fall arrives, envision the curl of the ocean waves, the sounds of music, and the smell of foods. Each of these aspects of His creation you can envision, but His word promises much more for those who love Him. As the negative aspects of this world pull you down, focus on the future. At that time, His most creative work here will be nothing compared to what is prepared for us.

CM Update 9/27/09

Psalm 124:1,3 - "If it had not been the LORD who was on our side," let Israel now say..."Then they would have swallowed us alive."

Life tends to be a battle. As we progress through life, we know that we are either facing a battle ourselves, observing a friend's struggle, or waiting for one to come. Right now, the financial battle is a very large one for our country, our friends, and our families. It seems overwhelming for many right now, but remember Psalm 124:1: The Lord is on your side. Say it to yourself as Israel had to as well. Say, "The LORD is on my side, had it not been so I would be swallowed alive."

When your friends need Jesus (but they don't have the strength to make it to Him), carry them upon your shoulders in prayer, service, support, and love. CM Update 9/13/09

Job 31:13-15 -- "If I have despised the cause of my male or female servant when they complained against me, what then shall I do when God rises up? When He punishes, how shall I answer Him? Did not He who made me in the womb make them? Did not the same One fashion us in the womb?"

It can be so easy to classify people in our mind. Even if we don't mean to, or we don't want to, we give greater value to one person over another. Job clearly states the truth about the value of people. God created each one, and He values each one. They were all fashioned by Him. Determine to start to thinking of all people from this perspective. This will enable you to touch the most people for God, and your heart will be in rhythm with the heart of God.

CM Update 9/6/09

Acts 2:37 - Now when they heard this, they were cut to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, "Men and brethren, what shall we do?"

As I was reading this verse, I was reflecting upon the attitude of the people. They heard the Gospel, they were aware of their sin, and they knew they were in trouble. Therefore, they were looking for salvation. They didn't need to be threatened, forced, convinced, or pressured. They desperately asked for help. As we share the Word with people, we shouldn't get uptight about convincing our listeners. We should simply state the facts and let them respond. God's truth will cut to their hearts if they are receptive. Rest in peace as you share the Good News.

Phil

CM Update 8/30/09

Isaiah 50:4 - "The Lord GOD has given Me the tongue of the learned, that I should know how to speak a word in season to him who is weary. He awakens Me morning by morning, He awakens My ear to hear as the learned.

Being a minister and representative of Jesus is very intimidating. I find it hard to have anything to say at times because I don't want to say the wrong thing, or the moment is beyond words. But, I find this verse very encouraging. It is Messianic, in that it speaks of Jesus having the words to minister, but I believe it applies to all those who are called by God to share Jesus. He will take our tongues and gives us the word of encouragement to speak. Trust Him for His provision of words at the right time.

Phil

CM Update 8/23/09

Acts 1:4 - And being assembled together with them, Jesus commanded them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the Promise of the Father...

Jesus was very careful to have His disciples wait for the Holy Spirit. Without the Holy Spirit, they would have had the same failures and fears as in their past. With the Holy Spirit, they would receive power to do His work. I exhort us to pray, ask, and wait for the Holy Spirit. We don't want to be a group of people who are doing church to build a large club. We want to be a group of people guided by the Holy Spirit of God and being His church for His pleasure.

Phil

CM Update 8/16/09

John 2:7 - Jesus said to them, "Fill the waterpots with water." And they filled them up to the brim.

Almost every coach has asked the players of his team to "give it your all" or to give over and above their all. He wants to extract the best out of his team. The coach loves the player who goes all out on his/her own initiative.
In this passage, Jesus gives a simple command to the servants of a wedding party. And they go all out. They don't fill the pots halfway or near the brim, but they fill them to the brim. This is a great quality to have in serving Jesus. As you serve in ministry, go all out for Him.

In Jesus,
Phil

CM Update 8/9/09

John 7:38 - He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water."

As a Christian minister, the Holy Spirit is an absolute need. He is our guide, He is our boldness, He is our power, and He is our comfort. Thankfully, Jesus promises that as we believe, the Holy Spirit will flow from us like living water. Let it be so.

CM Update 8/2/09

Matthew 4:17 - From that time Jesus began to preach and say, "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand."

Repentance: Turning from self to God. Casting off the works of sin and submitting yourself to the work and will of God. The correct choice is obvious, but the willingness to do so is not natural. Thus, Jesus began to preach and preached throughout His ministry repentance. We to need follow the lead of Jesus in calling for repentance. It is not an easy word, but it reaps a good reward.

CM Update 7/26/09

Isaiah 10:27 - It shall come to pass in that day that his burden will be taken away from your shoulder, and his yoke from your neck, and the yoke will be destroyed because of the anointing oil.

Sometimes I feel overwhelmed by situations before me. It may be a conversation I don't want to have. It may be a problem that seems unfixble. It may be when I feel over my head. Most of the time these problems don't come to pass, but I still get worked up. Yet, this promise in Isaiah gives me great peace. I recently was interacting with a group of people far my superior, but I realized I had no reason to be yoked with fear. The anointing of the Holy Spirit is in me and on me. He is my guide and my defense.

Know that the Holy Spirit is upon you as well. Trust in His power and guidance.

In Jesus,
Phil

CM Update 7/19/09

1 Corinthians 3:6-7 - I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the increase. So then neither he who plants is anything, nor he who waters, but God who gives the increase.

This week of Vacation Bible School has caused me to reflect upon the opportunity to sow God's word in the hearts of children. Some soil is hard, some is soft, some is rocky, but in any case, God's word is making an impact. Keep sowing God's word in your classes. God will reap an increase in the lives of these kids, and you get to be a part of His work.

In Jesus,

CM Update 7/12/09

Jeremiah 9:23-24 - Thus says the LORD: "Let not the wise man glory in his wisdom, let not the mighty man glory in his might, nor let the rich man glory in his riches; but let him who glories glory in this, that he understands and knows Me, that I am the LORD, exercising lovingkindness, judgment, and righteousness in the earth. For in these I delight," says the LORD.

Wisdom or knowledge, might or strength, and riches or wealth are easy for us to take great pride in, but these are deceiving. The true glory is to know God. The One who is all wise, all powerful, and exceedingly wealthy. Delight in Him!

Phil

CM Update 6/28/09

Matthew 2:19-20 - Now when Herod was dead, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt, saying, "Arise, take the young Child and His mother, and go to the land of Israel, for those who sought the young Child's life are dead."

Often times, it can feel like we keep getting beat in our pursuit of living close to God. Our own desires or the snares of the enemy divert us from where we intend to go. This verse in which Herod dies gives me hope because it is true that we will outlast our enemies. I don't mean in physical years here on Earth but in the sense that our enemies are bound to perish which includes even our own selfish desires. Conversely, our spirits are going to live forever with the Lord. Someday it will be said that Phil is in heaven while all those who sought his life are dead, and the same is true for you.

In Jesus,
Phil

CM Update 6/21/09

Matthew 2:8 - And [King Herod] sent them to Bethlehem and said, "Go and search carefully for the young Child, and when you have found Him, bring back word to me, that I may come and worship Him also."

As Herod did to the wise men, the Enemy is skilled in using trickery and deception. His goal is to confuse the minister of God with falsehood. Therefore, we need to pray that the Lord gives us discernment (clear understanding) as we minister to the kids and parents. Ask God to show you what is really the heart of a child's problem or how to help a parent with a certain circumstance. God is able and willing to give us wisdom when we ask.

In Jesus,
Phil

CM Update 6/14/09

Luke 2:36-37 - Now there was one, Anna, a prophetess, the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher. She was of a great age, and had lived with a husband seven years from her virginity; and this woman was a widow of about eighty-four years, who did not depart from the temple, but served God with fastings and prayers night and day.

Our culture constantly complains about old age, and we exalt in the glories of youth. The problem is that this is counter to the heart of God. God's word gives glory to the aged. It praises those who have lived a full number of days. Proverbs says that the 'gray head' is the splendor of the aged. Be diligent to find older believers who can be an example to you. Anna (in the preceding verses) is a beautiful example of the type of person with whom I want to spend time.

In Jesus,
Phil

CM Update 6/7/09

Luke 2:17 - Now when they had seen Him, they made widely known the saying which was told them concerning this Child.

Each us can relate in someway to the time when we first came to know Jesus in a life changing way. He was no longer the Savior. He is now my Savior, and He is real. This revelation caused us to pour forth His work in our lives to others. But, most of us can also relate to losing some of this passion bursting forth. Let us pray together that God will stir up the joy of our salvation so we might proclaim widely the work of Jesus.

In Jesus,
Phil

CM Appreciation Dinner

We had a nice night at the appreciation dinner. A great meal was made by the Manna Ministry, we had good fellowship, and some friendly competition.

You are all a great blessing to the church at SHCC. Thank you for all you do. Here is the poem that was read at the dinner and a few photos.

Only One Life
Two little lines I heard one day, Traveling along life’s busy way;
Bringing conviction to my heart, And from my mind would not depart;
Only one life, ’twill soon be past, Only what’s done for Christ will last.

Only one life, yes only one, Soon will its fleeting hours be done;
Then, in ‘that day’ my Lord to meet, And stand before His Judgment seat;
Only one life,’ twill soon be past, Only what’s done for Christ will last.

Only one life, the still small voice, Gently pleads for a better choice
Bidding me selfish aims to leave, And to God’s holy will to cleave;
Only one life, ’twill soon be past, Only what’s done for Christ will last.

Only one life, a few brief years, Each with its burdens, hopes, and fears;
Each with its days I must fulfill, living for self or in His will;
Only one life, ’twill soon be past, Only what’s done for Christ will last.

When this bright world would tempt me sore, When Satan would a victory score;
When self would seek to have its way, Then help me Lord with joy to say;
Only one life, ’twill soon be past, Only what’s done for Christ will last.

Give me Father, a purpose deep, In joy or sorrow Thy word to keep;
Faithful and true what e’er the strife, Pleasing Thee in my daily life;
Only one life, ’twill soon be past, Only what’s done for Christ will last.

Oh let my love with fervor burn, And from the world now let me turn;
Living for Thee, and Thee alone, Bringing Thee pleasure on Thy throne;
Only one life, 'twill soon be past, Only what’s done for Christ will last.

Only one life, yes only one, Now let me say, “Thy will be done”;
And when at last I’ll hear the call, I know I’ll say ‘twas worth it all”;
Only one life,’ twill soon be past, Only what’s done for Christ will last.

CM Update 5/31/09

Luke 2:7 - And she brought forth her firstborn Son, and wrapped Him in swaddling cloths, and laid Him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn.

Being separated and excluded from society is one of the worst forms of punishment. Many people have found themselves depressed by being excluded. Mary and Joseph must have wondered about God's plan when they ended up in a stable. We know that this was God's way of presenting His humble nature to us. As you minister in your classes, keep your eyes tuned to the excluded children. Be the arms of the Lord reaching out to them.

In Jesus,
Phil

CM Update 5/24/09

Luke 1:80 - So the child grew and became strong in spirit, and was in the deserts till the day of his manifestation to Israel.

Time in the desert seems to be a qualification for many of the characters in the Bible. John the Baptist (Lu. 1:80) spent time there. Moses (Ex. 3) spent time there. Paul (Gal. 1:17) spent time there. Jesus (Lu. 4) spent time there. God used these times to prepare His messengers for great service. If you are in a dry place, take heart because you are in great company. Look forward to the future in store for you.

In Jesus,
Phil

CM Update 5/17/09

Luke 1:38 - Then Mary said, "Behold the maidservant of the Lord! Let it be to me according to your word." And the angel departed from her.

How refreshing it is to be filled with faith. It is freeing to be in a situation of indecision yet to be able to declare with faith the way you will go. The weight of stress lifts from you and is placed upon our Lord. Mary did this when confronted with her virgin pregnancy. She couldn't understand it, but she knew she could trust her God. As you face crossroads in your life each day, trust the One who is worthy of our trust.

In Jesus,
Phil

CM Update 5/10/09

Luke 11:1 - Now it came to pass, as He was praying in a certain place, when He ceased, that one of His disciples said to Him, "Lord, teach us to pray, as John also taught his disciples."

When the disciples asked this question, they must have been in awe with the way Jesus prayed. It must have stirred them to ask how they might pray like Jesus. I don't think they were necessarily asking about the mechanics of how to pray, but they were asking about the intimacy with which Jesus prayed. They wanted to be related to God like Jesus.
And, I think I speak for all of us when I say the same, "Father, teach us how to pray."

In Jesus,

CM Update 5/3/09

Luke 24:27 - And beginning at Moses and all the Prophets, He expounded to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning Himself.

We have just finished the entire Old Testament (OT) story by story on Wednesday nights with the 4 Years thru 5th graders. That is very exciting and encouraging to me. The children at SHCC are hearing the whole council of God. They saw Jesus in the OT; now we get to see Him in the New Testament. It is important for each of us to take in all that God desires to speak through His word. Keep yourself in His word and rejoice as You complete sections of His word.

In Jesus,
Phil

CM Update 4/26/09

Malachi 4:5-6 - Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the Lord. And he will turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the hearts of the children to their fathers, lest I come and strike the earth with a curse.

Malachi's prophetic message closes the Old Testament with the threat of a curse. God had spoken an earnest call for man to repent from the first sin until Malachi, yet mankind choose every form of fulfillment but Him. Now, the Lord gives one last cry in the last book, chapter, and verse of the Old Testament. Thankfully, God's promise was not just a curse but a promise of Messiah, and even more thankfully, He did come and stop the curse. Now, we wait for the time when He will restore all things to how they should be. One of the greatest blessings will be the restoration of the broken family where parents (specifically fathers) live in love with their children. Keep looking to that day and your current cares will be in the right perspective.

In Jesus,
Phil
