CM Update 5/3/09

Luke 24:27 - And beginning at Moses and all the Prophets, He expounded to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning Himself.

We have just finished the entire Old Testament (OT) story by story on Wednesday nights with the 4 Years thru 5th graders. That is very exciting and encouraging to me. The children at SHCC are hearing the whole council of God. They saw Jesus in the OT; now we get to see Him in the New Testament. It is important for each of us to take in all that God desires to speak through His word. Keep yourself in His word and rejoice as You complete sections of His word.

In Jesus,
Phil

CM Update 4/26/09

Malachi 4:5-6 - Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the Lord. And he will turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the hearts of the children to their fathers, lest I come and strike the earth with a curse.

Malachi's prophetic message closes the Old Testament with the threat of a curse. God had spoken an earnest call for man to repent from the first sin until Malachi, yet mankind choose every form of fulfillment but Him. Now, the Lord gives one last cry in the last book, chapter, and verse of the Old Testament. Thankfully, God's promise was not just a curse but a promise of Messiah, and even more thankfully, He did come and stop the curse. Now, we wait for the time when He will restore all things to how they should be. One of the greatest blessings will be the restoration of the broken family where parents (specifically fathers) live in love with their children. Keep looking to that day and your current cares will be in the right perspective.

In Jesus,
Phil

Workshops
The following are a list of the available workshops for you to enjoy during our conference. The Lord has placed these subjects on the hearts of your CM leadership to share with you. We're excited for the opportunity to bless our ministers with material that should encourage and equip you in your ministry with the children. Please take a moment to look over each workshop, as you'll have to choose between a few options during each workshop session.

Workshop 1
11:00-11:50 am

Ministering in the Walkers and Nursery (Gerrit Foster) Babies begin learning from the moment they are born, and even newborns have the capacity to understand love and respond to routines. We want to provide an environment where their spiritual needs are addressed and not just their physical and emotional needs. Our goal as Nursery and Walkers' Teachers & Assistants is to teach these little ones of God's love, to pray for them, and to teach them why they have come to church. Come learn some easy, practical tips to make your teaching and assisting more effective.

Classroom Management (Jillian Strayer)
Managing a classroom full of kids can be quite overwhelming! This workshop will give you tips and ideas on how to organize and manage your class to maximize the learning time. When good classroom management happens, there tends to be less discipline needed. Enjoy learning about how to manage a group of kids and keep them accountable for their actions.

Engagement Strategies (Michael Joshua)
In this workshop, you will learn how to plan lessons that keep students actively listening, participating, and contributing. These strategies have moved my teaching from less talking at kids to more facilitating kids discovering the truths of God’s word. Through easy strategies, your lesson will become more effective in communicating God’s word to children.

Workshop 2
1:00 - 1:50 pm

Ministering to Families (Pastor Phil Spagnolo) How can our church minister to families through the Children's Ministry? The extent to which we can help and encourage parents to minister to their children will be the extent to which we are successful as a ministry. It is the wise minister who recognizes "effective" ministry is not only on Sunday morning, but it continues throughout the week in the home. The class will examine how our church can partner with parents in biblical education and training of their children.

Dandy-lion Taming: Tending God's Garden (Gerrit Foster) Through a fresh new approach, Garden of Grace Ministries offers a light-hearted but honest look at our true natures. This exciting workshop is based on the illustration of God's children growing in His garden. Do you have a challenging "weed" or "thorny flower" in your class? This perspective-changing class will help you recognize that each flower -- whatever their age -- was personally and specifically created by our Master Gardener. Through His grace and this informative & energetic workshop, we'll find new ways to tend God's garden in our ministry.

Workshop 3
2:00 - 2:50 pm

Being an Effective Servant (Tammy Wilson)
Are you a Lot, perhaps Moses, or maybe even a Joseph? This workshop will take a look at the lives of Lot, Moses, and Joseph and the type of servant they were or could have been. Then we will take a look at the type of servants we are ourselves. Are we effective servants, do we allow God to use us, or do we fight Him every step of the way? This workshop will help you conform to the great Servant Jesus Christ.

The Engaging Lesson (Jillian Strayer) As children's ministers, it is our job to effectively teach the Word and spiritual truths to the kids we have each week. This workshop will touch on some of the learning styles of children, giving you practical ways to make sure your kids understand what you are trying to teach them. It will give you useful ideas that you can use immediately to keep your kids engaged in the lesson you are teaching!

CM Update 4/19/09

Malachi 3:2 - But who can endure the day of His coming? And who can stand when He appears? For He is like a refiner's fire and like launderers' soap.

Who can endure the day when Jesus returns? Only those who have been washed/cleansed by the laundering soap of Jesus' blood. Only those who stand righteous in Him.
  1. Pro 10:30 The righteous will never be removed, But the wicked will not inhabit the earth.
  2. Pro 12:7 The wicked are overthrown and are no more, But the house of the righteous will stand.
Give thanks to the Lord today that you are firmly planted in the righteousness found in Christ Jesus.

In Jesus,
Phil

CM Update 4/12/09

Zechariah 14:4 - And in that day His feet will stand on the Mount of Olives, which faces Jerusalem on the east. And the Mount of Olives shall be split in two, from east to west, making a very large valley; half of the mountain shall move toward the north and half of it toward the south.

After Jesus was resurrected, He lifted off 40 days later from the Mount of Olives. Someday, He will spectacularly touchdown upon the Mount of Olives as we read above. During His time away, He is preparing a place for you to be with Him. Reflect on His death and pain for you on Friday, rejoice in His conquering death and sin on Sunday, and lift up your head thereafter because your destiny is to be with the living Christ.

In Jesus,

Phil
